About Rules and Regulations of Wooden Fences in Northern Virginia

The first thing to keep in mind is that styles of wooden fences can vary in Northern Virginia (NOVA). The style of your fence may also be dictated by your local homeowner’s association. For example, the Reston Virginia (ROA) may have approved completely different styles of fences and fence materials than those that have been approved by homeowner’s associations in other Northern Virginia associations. Once people begin moving into the communities, the decisions are then turned over to the homeowner’s association. Towns and cities typically are more liberal than homeowner’s associations, but Reston, VA’s rules and regulations concerning fencing could be different from the rules and regulations found in Vienna, VA even though both are located in Fairfax County, VA. Bottom line: Make certain you check with your local homeowner’s association before selecting your style of wooden fence.

There are many different types of wooden fences and styles of wooden fences vary greatly. Some of these include stockade, picket, lattice, and post and rail. Each of these styles of wooden fences has certain “common elements”.

If you’re planning on having a basic wooden privacy fence built in Northern Virginia, one thing is for certain is that all of the styles mentioned here have three basic elements and those are:

Fence Rails

  • Rails do the spanning work in wooden fences, connecting one post to the next post. They are your horizontal elements, running parallel to the ground.
  • Top and bottom rails are almost always found in wooden fence styles; many will also have middle rails.
  • It is the rails to which the boards (panels) will be attached.

Wooden Boards (Panels) Panels

  • The boards are the main screening component in a basic privacy wooden fence. In open wooden fence styles, such as the post and rail, there are no boards (thus the name, “post and rail”: that’s all there is). This also means that it will take less wood to build the fence.
  • In wooden fence styles such as the picket and the stockade, boards will be vertical components.
  • Each of the distinct panel designs is defined by shape, especially at the top (e.g., some panels terminate in a point or may be rounded).
  • The boards are sometimes attached so as to obscure the posts on one side or the other. The posts may be allowed to stand out on one or both sides.

Wooden Posts

  • A wooden post is a vertical component rooted firmly in the ground. Properly set posts will hold all the other components in place. These will serve as the foundation for your basic wooden fence.
  • Posts sometimes stand only as high as the tops of the wooden fence boards. In other wooden fence styles, the vertical posts are allowed to extend above the boards. In the latter case, we will often add finials as an option for fences that are preferred to be more of a decorative style.
  • Contact the professionals at Hal Co Fence if you’re looking to have a wood fence built for your Reston VA home.
