Summer has arrived, which also means that Northern Virginia residents in such communities as Lorton, Dumfries, and Purcellville, have fired up the grills for summer barbeques. Barbeques and backyard gatherings should be an enjoyable – and safe – experience for all involved. To make sure your barbeque event is a safe one, follow the below safety tips for grilling near decks:
- Make sure your grill is clean and in good working order.
- Position the grill on a level surface far away from siding, deck railings, and eaves, as well as any other walls, tree branches, or other combustible materials.
- Always follow grill manufacturers instructions.
- Be aware of any wind that could blow sparks.
- Keep a fire extinguisher within reach.
- Avoid wearing loose clothing.
- Use long-handled grilling tools.
- Never leave children or pets unattended near a hot grill.
- Never ignite a gas grill with the lid closed as the lid could blow off.
- Check and make sure all connections are tight before turning on the gas on a gas grill.
- Use only recognized starter fluid on a charcoal grill. After using starter fluid on a charcoal grill, cap the container and move it away from the fire. Never add any starter fluid once the coals are burning.
- Allow the grill to cool before attempting to move it.
- When removing ashes from a charcoal grill, make sure they are cool are put them in a non-flammable container. Add water to cool ashes to ensure they are fully out – just watch out for steam.
- Never leave your grill unattended.
