Building a new deck for your home in Washington, D.C. requires a lot of thoughtful planning, budgeting and a deck contractor. Brainstorming is a great way to begin, so grab your tablet and pencil or if you have a favorite app on your Smartphone, use it. By brainstorming different ideas for your deck, you can go in all different directions and hopefully will cover everything you want to incorporate into your deck. This along with your deck contractor should provide you with the deck of your dreams for your property in the Washington, D.C. area.

To start off on brainstorming…visit a showroom. Nothing quite gets your brain to start working like visuals. Also ride around Washington, D.C. throughout different neighborhoods. Sightseeing is another way to get ideas and get your brain to be open up to different thoughts. In fact, do your sightseeing on your way to the showroom, and then these dreams are still embedded in your mind.

Walk around the showroom and look at all the different decking designs. Hopefully, you can find a showroom with a few small replica’s of real decks to give you a better idea of the end result. Look at all the different woods, designs, railings, caps. Grab up some of their literature if they have any lying around. Take notes and jot down prices of difference decking boards you like. Price more than one.

Only you know what your budget is so one of your brainstorming circles should be for pricing within your budget range—high grade, mid-grade, or low grade. A circle for each. Even at the lowest grade, with enough brainstorming, your deck contractor should be able to design the smallest of decks to look high grade in appearance. By incorporating different patterns with your decking boards, you can sometimes save money on material with smaller cuts; therefore, giving you the opportunity to upgrade to a mid-grade decking board or possibly to purchase the new patio furniture you’ve been eyeing in Washington, D.C.

Speak with one of the deck contractors while you are at the showroom in Washington, D.C. Afterwards, go home and continue to brainstorm. Think about all the things you and your family want for your dream deck. Put each of those dreams into a circle for your brainstorming. Draw a circle for each design you picked with lines to the price, maintenance, and cost. Visually seeing one circle explaining maintenance that is involved on a particular decking material you liked while another circle says, no maintenance and you look at the difference in price, who knows what you will decide. But a visual will give you a more broader view of the different ideas that you can include such as lighting, furniture, built-in bench, stairs, and gates (for small children or pet) for the new deck at your Washington, D.C. home.

Roughly draw up a plan. Even if you can’t draw, you can put something on paper. Have your deck contractor come to your Washington, D.C. home and discuss at great lengths your different ideas, what you think you can afford. Experienced deck contractors who have been in the business for years such as Hal Co Fence, have unlimited design ideas they can suggest, possibly giving you a better quality deck at a more reasonable price.
