A pergola is a lovely addition to your Great Falls VA Deck Design. Pergolas are either attached to your home, freestanding, or a hybrid of the first two.

Attached pergolas have one side of the pergola \’attached\’ to the wall of a home or structure. They use the wall to support that side of the pergola; the other side of the pergola is supported by a beam or beams that are in turn supported by the posts or columns, anchored to the deck. Attached pergolas are less expensive than freestanding pergolas.

Freestanding pergolas have at least four posts and like their name says, stand without being attached to any other structure or wall. These are much less likely to be used on decks, as they are heavier, and require a larger structure. Also, the larger the pergola, the higher the rafters should be to keep things in proportion – and may be too heavy for a deck, unless there is work done to reinforce the deck.

The first two – attached and freestanding – are the norm for pergola designs. Rarely, a hybrid pergola is built to fit around the corner of a house. A hybrid combines the features and benefits of both an attached and a freestanding pergola, and due to their complicated nature, are comparably more expensive than attached or freestanding pergolas.
