When we think about fencing we usually think about keeping children, dogs or livestock in. We rarely think about cat fencing. Because a cat can leap, climb, dig and squeeze, we tend to think that a fence is not protection against (or for) a cat. But cat proof fencing does exist. So, whether you want to keep cats in or out, you might consider a cat proof fence.

Cat proof fencing does have to be high. It also has to be fairly dense to stop cats squeezing through. If you are trying to contain cats, you can build a lower fence with a wire netting roof. That will stop cats climbing out. If you are trying to keep cats out and do not want a wire roof on your yard, there are other fencing options.

However, it may not be necessary for the wire roof to go all the way across. You can have an overhang of fence on the side that the cat is jumping from. This will make it impossible or at least far more difficult for the cat to jump to the top of the fence. Cats do not like to jump onto wire. The wire netting does not look too attractive. If you choose that type of fencing you might decide to plant trees or climbing plants on the other side of the fence (the side the cat is not on) to improve the appearance.

Another method of cat-proofing a fence is to add a roller to the top of the fence. If the cat jumps or climbs onto the roller, the roller will roll and the cat will fall off.

Your Northern Virginia fence contractor can help you figure out whether you can cat-proof your existing fence or whether you need a new fence to keep cats in — or out.
