Virginia is the birthplace of America and of the wooden rail fence. Known as the snake or worm fence, it is an American original. Graceful ribbons of split rail still wind along the Civil War Heritage Trail, having survived the Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. For centuries, the split rail fence has defined agricultural fields at Belvedere Plantation, a 645-acre heritage farm built in the 1760s along the Rappahannock River, near the “Crossroads of the Civil War” in Spotsylvania County. In spite of its popularity, the wooden rail fence was impractical. It needed constant repair, rotted quickly, and required lots of wood. Yet years after the Civil War this remained our national fence.
