What you Can Do to Protect your Deck in Fairfax, VA

Have you been enjoying your deck this year? We sure hope so, and we want you to be able to enjoy it for many years to come. That’s why, this month, we’re publishing this short list of tips to help protect your Fairfax, VA deck this winter. Here are the key things you need to know:

  • Before the cold sets in, give it a good cleaning, including moving all planters and similar objects into storage. You don’t want water to collect under them, which could lead to discoloration or permanent marks on the surface of your deck.
  • If you have a wooden deck, the cleaning process should include a once–per–year power washing, which is a service we provide. While you’re at it, we’d also recommend having an annual inspection performed. This will allow us to catch any problems that may be developing and get them fixed, so your deck is ready for entertaining in the spring. Note that decks made from composite materials do not require power washing. Warm soap and water will suffice.
  • If you have a wooden deck, once it’s been power washed, a great way to provide additional protection is to re–stain it. When you do, be sure to choose a water–repellant finish.
  • If you don’t plan on using your deck at all during the winter months, cover it with a tarp. This is one of the most powerful things you can do to protect your Fairfax, VA deck this winter.
  • While many people recommend shoveling the snow from your deck regularly, we actually don’t recommend this. If you have a composite deck, moisture from the snow won’t hurt it, and if you have a wooden deck, the lumber used in its construction was treated to withstand the moisture. That, combined with a water–repellent stain, should be more than enough. If you do have to shovel, be sure to shovel parallel to the deck boards, and don’t use a shovel with a metal blade.
  • Finally, avoid using salt or ice chippers of any kind to get rid of ice accumulations on your deck.
