Do you have a split rail fence on your Gainesville, VA property? Has it begun to show its age? It happens. If some of the rails or posts are showing signs of rot, you’ve probably added the repair to your mental to-do list and if you’re a reasonably experienced do it yourselfer, that’s a job you can almost certainly tackle solo, but there’s a catch: Even modest fence repairs can be enormous time sinks, to say nothing of the price your aching back will pay later.

You’ve probably got a thousand things you’d rather do with your hard-earned days off than that. The good news, though, is that there’s a better way. Just call us! Nobody knows more about split rail fence repairs in Gainesville, VA than we do, and we’re happy to assist.

The first thing we’ll do when you call on us is come out to your property to survey the damage and assess the situation for ourselves. In the vast majority of cases, we’ll be able to repair the split rail fence on your Gainesville, VA property for a small fraction of what it would cost you to have something new built in its place.

Sometimes though, especially if your fence is quite old or severely damaged, it just makes more sense to tear it down and start over. We won’t know that until we’ve had a chance to see it, but whatever we find, we’ll give you a full report, our professional recommendation on the best way to proceed, and a free, no-obligation estimate so you’ll have a clear understanding of what it will take to get your fence whipped back into shape.

Some homeowners prefer to see the damaged split rail fence on their Gainesville, VA property as an opportunity to upgrade to something totally custom that puts their individual stamp on their property. If that’s the route you want to go, we can help with that too. Over the years, we’ve designed and built dozens of custom fences for clients in the area.

Understand though, that a custom fence is a much bigger project than a simple repair job, or a replacement using stock fencing off the shelf. In that case, the first thing we’ll want to do is sit down with you to capture your vision.

If you don’t have a clear mental image of the fence you want, we invite you to spend some time browsing the extensive collection of photos we keep elsewhere on the site. Doing that gives you two key advantages.

First, it gives you the opportunity to see the quality of the work we do before you decide to work with us, which allows you to hire us with confidence. Second, it’s guaranteed to give you all sorts of great ideas for your own project.

Of course, we do a lot more than simply build or repair split rail fence in Gainesville, VA. If you have other needs, below, we’ll talk about some of the other ways we might be able to assist you.

Porches

Do you have a front, back or side porch that’s a bit scary these days? So rickety that your family doesn’t even like to go out on it? We have a fix for that. Just like we can restore aging fences to their former glory, we can work the same magic with your aging porch, and once we have it looking like new again, we can come out on an annual basis if you like to inspect it and make any incremental repairs that might be needed.

If you don’t yet have a porch, but you’ve always wanted one, we can design and build something totally custom for you.

Building a custom porch is a sizeable project, even bigger than building a custom fence, so we’ll need to sit down with you and capture a number of details. Here are just a few of the questions we’ll be asking:

  • What materials would you prefer we use in the construction of the porch?
  • Is this to be a front porch, side porch, or back porch? Or, do you want one that wraps at least partway around your house? If so, how far should it wrap?
  • How will you access the porch from the house?
  • How will you access the yard from the porch? Do you envision one central set of steps leading up, or that plus steps on one or both sides?
  • If you need steps and/or safety rails, what should they look like and what materials should they be made of?
  • Do you want an extra wide porch with plenty of room for a porch swing and other outdoor furnishings?

And what about the possibility of a screened-in porch? They’re tremendously popular in this part of the country because they provide a great place to entertain family and friends without having to worry about the bugs. If you’d like your current porch screened in, or if you’d like us to build you a custom screened porch, we’re happy to do that!

Once we’ve captured all the details, the rest of our process is functionally similar to what we described above for the custom fencing project.

Decks

In addition to dealing with all things porch and fence related, we can also restore your aging deck to its former glory if you have one but it’s been a while since any member of your family has been brave enough to set foot on it.

If you don’t have a deck yet, but you’ve always wanted one, we do custom deck construction too! A custom deck is an even larger and more involved project than a custom porch, but our process is very similar. The questions we’ll be asking on the front end are understandably different though, and include things like:

  • How big do you want your dream deck to be?
  • What material or materials do you want it made out of? – broadly speaking, you’ve got two basic options here: either pressure-treated lumber or some type of composite material.
  • How does it connect to your house, and how do you access it from inside your home?
  • Is it all on one level, or because of the lay of your land, do you need something that exists on multiple levels that gradually step down into your yard?
  • Will you need steps? If so, what should they look like and what are they made of?
  • Will you need safety rails? If so, what should those look like and what materials should we use in their construction?
  • Do you just want one big, wide-open space, or do you envision a deck that’s broken into several functional areas: One for grilling, another for dining, maybe space for a hot tub and or a wet bar?
  • What about the possibility of built-in seating?
  • Have you thought about extras, like having us add hidden storage compartments?

One additional thing we’ll point out here is regarding materials. As we mentioned above, you’ve basically got two choices on the materials front. You can either opt to have your deck built from pressure-treated lumber or a composite material.

There are no right answers where this is concerned, but there are certain tradeoffs involved.

If you opt for pressure-treated lumber, your initial build costs will be lower, but your ongoing maintenance costs will be higher because you’ll need to have your deck annually inspected, annually power washed and annually stained and sealed in order to prolong its life and keep it in prime condition.

If you go with some type of composite material, you’ll see higher upfront costs, but your annual maintenance costs will be less because you won’t need to power wash, stain or seal every year, although we do still recommend annual maintenance.

As you can see, the sky’s the limit where your outdoor spaces are concerned. Whatever your needs are, we’ve got you covered. Give our office a call today!
